The Importance of Surgical Instruments in Orthopaedics

 

The life time of an orthopaedic implant inside a patient fixing either a bone or a joint, is very much dependent on how “quality” the instrument set for that particular implant is designed and manufactured.
Every implant requires a particular instrument set designed to the specifications of that implant. When designer is working on an implant, the priority of the designer is not only the implant itself but also how to place the implant inside the body and assure it’ll function properly through its lifetime. Therefore normally, the implant and the instrument set are designed head-to-head with each other and sometimes due to the complexities arise on the design of the instruments, the design parameters of the implant might have to be revised.
When designing an instrument set, the priority is to be in-line with all design specifications of the implant as well as come-up with a “handy” design easy to use throughout all the steps of surgery without any problem. But design is only a concept which should surely be well in place.
After design is completed, the next big goal is manufacturing both the implant and the instrument set exactly to the precision of the design parameters. The milimetre difference in cemented and non-cemented application in an arthroplasty implant, explains why the instrument set should be manufactured precise to the design.
On the other hand, manufacturing should be in high quality. Actually surgery is a symphony of orchestra with various surgical instruments conducted by the Surgeon. That is why sometimes operation room is called “theatre”. To achieve a good sound of the orchestra and finish the surgery in the shortest time possible with success, the instruments should work well without any malfunction nor breakage as it’s the common consciousness of the operation team that any delay during the surgery simply increases the risk of patient’s life therefore should be avoided or be solved in the shortest time possible.
